3 types of car accidents that can happen in parking lots

Parking lots might seem like low-risk areas when it comes to car accidents, but they are surprisingly common hotspots for collisions. Parking lots are chaotic environments with drivers pulling in and out of spaces, pedestrians walking between vehicles and limited visibility.

Familiarizing with the most common types of parking lot accidents can help everyone stay alert and avoid preventable mishaps.

1. Backing-out collisions

Because of the lack of established traffic flow within parking rows, it’s easy for drivers to focus only on what’s behind them, not realizing another vehicle is doing the same nearby. This type of collision typically results in rear bumper damage, but can also cause injury if one car is moving faster than expected. To avoid backing-out collisions, it’s crucial for drivers to:

  • Check their mirrors
  • Look over their shoulder
  • Back out slowly

Installing rearview cameras or sensors can also help prevent these accidents.

2. Pedestrian accidents

These collisions often transpire when a motorist is distracted or fails to notice a pedestrian walking behind or in front of their car. Children, elderly individuals and people walking between cars are particularly at risk, as they can be harder to see.

To reduce the risk of pedestrian accidents, drivers should move slowly, especially near store entrances, and always yield to foot traffic. Pedestrians should also stay alert and avoid walking directly behind reversing vehicles.

3. Parking spot disputes and sideswipes

Another common cause of parking lot accidents is two vehicles competing for the same parking space or navigating narrow aisles. In these scenarios, tempers can flare, and decisions are often made hastily. Drivers may try to squeeze into tight spots or assume another driver will yield, leading to sideswipes or fender benders. Additionally, misjudging the distance between parked cars when pulling in or out can result in scraping another vehicle.

While parking lot accidents are often minor, they can still lead to costly repairs and serious injuries. Motorists and pedestrians who get involved in these collisions should enlist legal guidance to identify the responsible parties.
